LAIA COSTA
COMMUNITY
“Only through the other, the different, can we know ourselves.”
Activist for legal rights to human mobility for all people, with a decolonial awareness and community focus. Laia follows the intuition that comeing back to feeling ourselves as nature, and delving deeper into the ancient knowledge of those who preceded us, is the path to healing as members of Western civilization.
After 12 years as a lawyer dedicated to the legal defense of migrants, trainer and legal advisor in various non-profit organizations and at the Barcelona City Council in the family reunification program for foreign families, she realized that the law was not fair and went to live in Colombia where she accompanied indigenous communities in their processes of autonomy and the elaboration of their life plans.
In addition, together with Afro-descendant communities, an attempt was made to think about the implementation of the Havana Peace Accords, from an approach of respect for ethnic cultures. Later in Canada, with the teacher Kalpana Das, she was able to understand the depth of colonialism and the need for the decolonization of Western thought. In recent years, she has been more linked to refugees (Lesbos, Canary Islands) and young people who migrate alone, both on the Southern Spanish Border, and in Garrotxa where she lives.
